Website Accessibility Checklist for Alaska Organizations

An owner-friendly accessibility review that catches high-impact problems before a new Alaska website launches.

Accessibility is part of a website's basic usability. A customer should be able to navigate, read, complete forms and access essential information without relying on a mouse, perfect vision, or complicated interactive effects. This checklist supports testing but does not replace an expert WCAG audit.

Start with a keyboard

Use Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space and Escape to traverse the complete user journey. Every interactive control should have a visible focus indicator, logical order and an understandable label. Menus should be operable, dismissible and not trap focus.

Test the primary action on each page: submission, booking, checkout, job application or search. A visually beautiful form that fails keyboard use is not launch-ready.

Make content readable

Check contrast of text and controls, heading hierarchy, meaningful link wording, visible error messages, form instructions and zoom at 200%. Use actual alt text for informative images and empty alt attributes for purely decorative art.

Do not encode essential information only in color. Provide transcripts or captions for meaningful video when relevant and ensure autoplay or moving effects do not prevent reading.

Use WCAG as a baseline

W3C publishes Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, with testable success criteria. Many organizations target AA, but legal obligations depend on the organization and context. A site builder should specify which standard and which testing methods are included.

Automated scanners are useful for repetitive checks, but manual keyboard and screen-reader testing catch failures that numbers alone miss.

  • Visible keyboard focus and operable mobile navigation
  • Form labels and error recovery
  • Text contrast and responsive zoom
  • Captions for meaningful prerecorded media
  • Reduced-motion behavior and no forced interactions

Make accessibility a release gate

Record the templates tested, devices, browsers, issues found and fixes retested. Recheck after new content is published, not only during the initial build.
