Alaska Nonprofit Website Redesign: Content, Access and Longevity

A decision guide for Alaska nonprofits balancing limited staff time, community trust, accessibility and long-term maintenance.

A nonprofit website often belongs to several audiences at once: people seeking services, donors, volunteers, staff, partners and grantmakers. A strong redesign prioritizes tasks and clear editing ownership before visual novelty.

Map the real audiences

Separate urgent service information from donation messaging. Someone looking for eligibility, hours or contact details should not have to navigate a fundraising landing page first. If the organization serves more than one region, explain which programs operate where.

Create a content review roster: staff owner, source, last verified date, translation needs and next review. Outdated service information can erode trust quickly.

Treat accessibility and governance as deliverables

Specify accessibility testing methods, readable typography, form labels, downloadable document accessibility and keyboard flows. Assign editorial approval rights and define how website notices are published when regular staff are away.

Ask how personally sensitive inquiry information is retained and who can access it. Keep unnecessary data out of public forms.

Plan for organizational change

Nonprofits change staff, programs and funding. Request admin documentation, clear content models, account ownership and straightforward migration paths. A site should remain usable when the original project manager leaves.

A lower initial proposal can cost more later if every small content change requires specialized engineering. Evaluate at least three years of operational needs, not only launch day.

Measure the right outcomes

Track whether users find services, complete intake forms, reach staff, register for events or donate. Measure search traffic as one signal, not the only measure of impact.
